My name is Scott Spitz and I am a distance runner and cancer patient. I am humbly requesting support for a fundraiser I am conducting on behalf of the organization, Family Reach, wherein I will seek to raise $50,000, in part by running the length of Indiana (August 23rd - 29th), self-supported, covering approximately 50 miles a day, for 7 days straight. Family Reach is a non-profit that works to alleviate the financial burden of everyday expenses that accumulate during a cancer patient’s treatment including mortgage payments, transportation and utility payments, as well as unmet medical costs not covered by insurance.

I am conducting this fundraiser for many reasons, but first and foremost, because I have been the recipient of financial aid after my two surgeries and directly understand how important these funds are to keeping the financial responsibilities of cancer patients and their families intact. When I entered my surgeries and year of chemotherapy, I could only think about surviving cancer and recovering from the physical ravages of treatment, but as I thrived through my cancer experience I was able to understand how important the funds raised on my behalf were, allowing me to keep my house, provide for my son, and focus on recovery without undue emotional stress. More recently, a friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer for the second time and Family Reach was able to assist her in paying for unexpected drug treatments and rent payments while she was unable to work, letting her concentrate on rest and recovery from each successive chemotherapy treatment.

These stories are, unfortunately, not unique. The hundreds of thousands of cancer patients going through treatment each year often lose the ability to work, find themselves facing unreal medical bills, and are troubled with new emotional stressors on top of having to face the battle of cancer. It’s likely you have friends or family members who have gone through the hardship of cancer as the estimated number of new cancer cases for 2015 is approximately 1,658,370. In 2012, 15.4% of Americans were without insurance, but even with insurance the day to day costs of living while battling cancer can be overwhelming. It is the crucial work of Family Reach and its generous donors that help to alleviate these many burdens.

The good news is that you can make a direct impact and help reduce these burdens!

I am humbly asking you to contribute to the lives of cancer patients, to assist them in their struggle against a frightening disease, to help give them light in a moment of darkness. Your donation, no matter how small, will have a tremendous, direct, and measurable impact upon the lives of a cancer patient and their family. I am a testament to the power of your financial contribution.

Family Reach is a 501c3 organization and all donations are tax-deductible

I would be very excited to have you as a supporter of my run!

Best regards,

Scott Spitz
